Janice A. Barber, Esq.



Ms. Barber received her B.A. with High Distinction in the Honors Program and with honors in journalism and political science from the University of Kentucky in 1969. While at the University of Kentucky, Ms. Barber was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Lambda Delta scholastic honoraries. After working as a daily newspaper reporter in Rochester, New York, Ms. Barber enrolled at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law and received her J.D. degree, cum laude, in 1977. Since 1977, Ms. Barber has been extensively involved with the defense of malpractice claims against hospitals, doctors, and nurses. Ms. Barber is a lecturer on the adjunct faculty at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law. She is admitted to practice in New York State, the Federal District Court for the Western District of New York and before the United States Supreme Court. Ms. Barber's professional memberships include the Erie County Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association. She has lectured extensively to nurses and nursing students on medical malpractice and the importance of documentation. Ms. Barber has also been a lecturer for the New York State Bar Association's continuing education programs concerning medical malpractice litigation, the conduct of discovery, and the conduct of depositions. Ms. Barber was formerly a partner at the Buffalo, New York law firm of Smith, Murphy & Schoepperle, where she practiced general civil defense litigation, including premises liability, school accidents, motor vehicle liability, and construction accident litigation; products liability defense for various corporations and pharmaceutical companies; subrogation claims for a major insurance carrier; and defense of  medical malpractice cases for 18 years. Ms. Barber was included on the 2009, 2010, and 2011 Super Lawyers list of the top attorneys in Upstate New York in personal injury defense - medical malpractice.  Ms. Barber was recognized in the area of personal injury defense, medical malpractice.  Ms. Barber is a member of the Board of Directors and past president of the Parkside Community Association in Buffalo.  She served as a a member of the vestry and warden of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Buffalo.  She was the chair of the successful grassroots Committee to Keep the Zoo in Delaware Park in Buffalo, and has served on the Buffalo Zoo's Pro Zoo Board, on the Board of Trustees of the Preservation Coalition of Buffalo & Erie County, on the Board of Directors of the Buffalo Branch of the American Association of University Women, on the Board of Directors of the Buffalo branch of the New York State Women's Bar Association, and was an officer and member of the Board of Directors of the Twentieth Century Club in Buffalo.
